Senior right-hander picked in 19th round
By Bill Cornwell
Marshall pitcher Nicholas Weyrich was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the 19th round of this week’s Major League Baseball Draft.
Weyrich, a senior right-hander from London, Ohio, capped a solid career with the Thundering Herd before hearing his name called.
He made 85 appearances on the mound for Marshall, including 83 in relief and two starts, finishing with 12 saves, eight wins, and 146 strikeouts over 138.1 innings. He had multiple strikeouts in 39 outings, highlighted by a career-best nine punchouts over a career-high 7.2 innings on March 24, 2024, against Arkansas State.
This spring, Weyrich posted a 6-4 record and a 3.80 ERA across 28 relief appearances, tallying seven saves. He added two more saves during the Sun Belt Conference Baseball Tournament, helping the Herd to wins over Louisiana.
Marshall head coach Greg Beals praised Weyrich for both his performance and his adaptability.
“I am really happy for Nick,” Beals said. “He has the athleticism to make the adjustment to be a submarine pitcher and then he put in the work. We asked Nick to pitch in the toughest of situations, and he handled it like a true competitor. I look forward to watching Nick’s continued development as a professional.”
Weyrich was one of 21 Sun Belt Conference players selected in the 2024 draft, a group headlined by Coastal Carolina catcher Caden Bodine, who was picked 30th overall in the first round by the Baltimore Orioles.
Coal Cats Alum Poteet Drafted by Cubs
Former Tri-State Coal Cats catcher Logan Poteet was taken in the 17th round by the Chicago Cubs. Poteet played for the Coal Cats of the Appalachian League in 2024 before transferring from Vanderbilt to the University of Charlotte.
This spring with the 49ers, Poteet threw out 22 attempted base stealers and was named to the American Athletic Conference second team. He batted .282 with 51 hits, ranking fifth on the team in average and seventh in hits. He drove in 40 runs (third-most on the team) and was one of four Charlotte players to hit double-digit home runs, tying for fourth with 10.
